October is the month in which the cold air sinks in. I am guilty of staying in more, sipping on tea in the evenings and giving the new Fall television series a chance. The leaves are changing colours; our mornings are cold and the afternoons are perfect for your favourite sweater. For some, plans to take a vacation down South begin. But for many, we explore our community events. If your weekends aren’t already planned, here are some events to check out in October!
Saturday, October 1
The first weekend of the month is the annual Newcastle Harvest Festival. Downtown Newcastle is shut down for a small festival to celebrate local agriculture, art, food and live entertainment. There will be over 30 local small business vendors set-up, plus all of the shops in Newcastle that usually run special promotions in-store. Other than shopping, you can enjoy warm apple cider, pumpkin painting, a petting zoo, a tractor and car show and much more.
Starting October 5, continuing every Wednesday and Saturday until October 29
Clarington Museums will be hosting their annual Spirit Walks. This year there will be live acting vignettes along the tour, you experience will be guided through Bowmanville’s most haunted areas. Tickets are only $10 + tax in advance.
Saturday, October 15
The middle of October marks the date of the annual Apple Festival and Craft Sale brought to you by the merchants of downtown Bowmanville. This event tends to be pretty popular, offering free admission and free parking. Truthfully, parking space is pretty limited so think about carpooling or walking if you can. You’ll find everything “apple” at this event. Cider, pies, crisps, candy apples, donuts and hot apple fritters. If you’re into crafts, there are a ton of unique and handmade crafts along the booths that line the street. Of course, this festival showcases local musicians and offers plenty of things for the kids.
Friday, October 21 + Saturday, October 22
The old firehouse on Church Street in Bowmanville is hosting their indoor Fright Night. The event will be great for all ages, but Friday after 8pm and Sunday after 7pm is when things start to get a bit more “scarier.” The madness starts Friday at 6pm and Sunday at 5pm. Unlike some other haunted attractions, this one is interactive and offers two different routes. They have set up scenes to stop and watch and you are welcome to go through twice.
Friday, October 28
OGPS Filming and Investigations, famed paranormal investigators seen and heard on CTV and CityTV are hosting a one night event at the Bowmanville Museum. Tickets are only available in advance, for $20 + tax. Join the team as they test for strange happenings and spirits in the area.
