Working in a creative industry is the best. When thinking of what I wanted to do while growing up I always knew I wanted to do something fun. After all, you spend 8+ hours a day at work! I have been lucky enough to have some really amazing jobs at some groundbreaking companies. Everything from launching (and growing!) one of Canada’s biggest camping music festival to cultivating online communities as a brand manager for a widely successful subscription box with 100,000+ boxes going out each month. At these companies, I was always working with the owner closely, in some cases, as their assistant. Late last year I left a company I had been involved with for seven years to work closer to home and get agency experience. I have a ton of brand experience but have finally been able to gather experience as a manager as a creative agency consulting on branding, website and marketing strategy. This ties into my experience working with events, influencers and managing projects with some massive brands such as Universal Studios.
But what do I want to do? One day – I want to work for myself, I want to be in control and I want to kick ass with an amazing team. I can tell you, being a business owner is a lot and I’m still learning. I’ll always be learning but I’m in full on sponge mode.
It’s important to work for someone else, to get experience but to never forget about your dreams while your building someone else’s. While working for someone else, you can lose motivation – you might feel under appreciate and you might be overworked. You put that hard work in and you get a pay cheque. You hustle to learn, to grow and to experience new challenges.
I thought I’d share some quick tips on how to stay motivated:
– Create a dream web: include goals, timelines and visual pieces to visualise your goal
– Start a gratitude journal: what are you doing now to help you get where you want to be, what things do you appreciate?
– Surround yourself with like-minded people: inspire others, empower and hype up one another
– Get help when you need it: take a mentor out for dinner and pick their brain, continue to learn from coaches, events, webinars, etc.
– Take breaks and practice self-care: don’t run yourself to the ground, spoil yourself and keep the end goal in mind; there’s no rush
– Believe in yourself: don’t be hard on yourself, stop doubting yourself and fucking hustle
